Boris Island Airport
Publication date: 16-11-2009
Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has set his sights on building a new island airport in the Thames Estuary between the Isle of Sheppey and Shoebury Ness.
This raises a number of issues:
- expansion of aviation when the Climate Change Act 2008 calls for an 80% cut in carbon emissions by 2050;
- The Thames Estuary attracts hundreds of thousands of migratory birds;
- Massive new road and rail links will need to be built across Swale and Sheppey to connect the island to Kent's strategic transport network;
- The Thames Estuary is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world.
- The existing and future wind power arrays may give unacceptable radar interference.
- It will be hugely expensive and create enormous amounts of construction and operational traffic.
