Food and Farming

Campaign date: 08-01-2008

Food and Farming

Because most of Kent’s countryside is farmed, agriculture has a profound effect on the appearance and wellbeing of our countryside. This is especially pertinent as farming adapts to increasing globalisation, and prices for many crops are rising rapidly.

CPRE Kent believes there are two principal ways in which farming’s stewardship of a thriving and beautiful countryside can be helped:

• First, through the continued implementation of national-government and EU-sponsored environmental stewardship schemes.
• Second, through an increase in the buying of local foods. If we know in detail where our food comes from and how it is produced, we can actively support farming which looks after the landscape and its wildlife, as well as reducing food miles.
