SELLINDGE AND PROTECT KENT REMAIN UNITED AGAINST SLUDGE PLANT

Kent County Council last night, held a public meeting in Lympne, to give local residents the opportunity to feedback their concerns and comments on the proposal by Countrystyle Recycling Ltd to operate a Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) and Anaerobic Digestion Plant in the village of Sellindge.
Protect Kent attended the meeting along with over 200 local residents including members of the Sellindge Residents Association, MP for Folkestone and Hythe, Michael Howard and Kent Police.
Since the original application was submitted in December 2007, Protect Kent has campaigned against this proposal which we feel would destroy the tranquility and community of Sellindge.
Local residents last night, raised concerns on a range of issues from the choice of the site location and access, harmful emissions to the atmosphere, increased traffic through the village, lack of communication made by the applicant with village residents and the effect the gasses, dust and smell could have on people’s health.
One local man, who lives near the A20 bought his young son to the meeting, who suffers with asthma and other breathing difficulties – to highlight his concerns of the health effect the site may on have on his children and nearby schools.
Protect Kent fully supports the concerns raised by residents over the increased lorry HGV traffic which would have to pass through the villages of Sellindge and Newingreen and the noise and smell created by the site and the HGVs.
We are also worried about the pollution risk to the East Stour and the underlying Lower Greensand aquifer and the intrusive industrial buildings which would destroy the beautiful rural setting of the East Stour valley.
It is hoped that a decision will be made by Kent County Council on this application by May 2010.
