Committee:-
Chairman: Mr Glyn Thomas
Description:-
Dover district features steep-sided North Downs valleys and the famous white cliffs, as well as less hilly countryside to the north that includes part of the Stour Marshes and around the historic port of Sandwich. With the world’s busiest ferry port, Dover has to cope with large volumes of traffic, especially HGVs, using the A20 and A2. It is therefore especially important that the district’s tranquil and unspoilt areas are safeguarded from inappropriate development as much as possible.
Hot issues:-
- The expansion of Dover docks with ever increasing volumes of lorry freight is causing huge problems across Kent. The Port make the money, the rest of us pay the price. We want to see the Port build a reclaimed-land lorry park to cope with Operation Stack and other lorry parking problems that blight Kent.
- Dover town is expanding as has been designated a 'Growth Point' by Government. The main area of expansion is to the north of the town, around Whitfield. We think that priority should go to regenerating the run-down centre.
- Housing growth and Deal and Sholden is raising concerns locally about flood risk and the ability of roads and other services to cope with the extra demand.
